UNITED KINGDOM : Nigel Turner becomes Deputy Chairman. Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, currently Chief Executive Officer of India’s Jet Airways, has been appointed deputy Chief Executive Officer of British Midland PLC (bmi), with effect from 1 November 2009. On 1 December 2009, he will succeed Nigel Turner as Chief Executive Officer of bmi. Nigel Turner will then become Deputy Chairman, of the bmi Board. A smooth and very cooperative change at the top is therefore guaranteed.

INDIA : Mr. Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, Chief Executive Officer has resigned from the services of the company, effective 15-Oct-2009. Mr. Prock-Schauer wishes to rejoin his family in Europe and will be joining British Midland PLC (bmi) as its Chief Executive Officer and will be based in UK.

The two hour agitation by a section of Air India employees failed to have any impact on flights anywhere on Air India’s country-wide network today. As stated by the Air India Management earlier, requisite steps had been taken to ensure total normalcy in operations so that passengers were not inconvenienced.

While the airline says the decision was taken to cut costs in bad times, pilots feel travelling economy while on duty is not a great way to save money.

INDIA : The country’s second-largest private carrier Jet Airways has sacked 50 employees and referred them to an in-house out placement cell, which will help the employees look for jobs with other airlines. Interestingly, Jet has taken this decision when the country has just concluded its general elections with formation of the new government just some days away.

India became 91st country to have ratified Montreal Convention 1999. Director General of Civil Aviation (India) has deposited with ICAO on 01-May-09, the Instrument of Accession by India to the Convention for Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air done at Montreal on 28-May-1999. The Convention will become effective for India on 30th June 2009, being the 60th day after depositing the Instrument in accordance with its Article 53 Para (7) of the Convention.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA : Capt. John Prater, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), issued the following statement in response to the ratification of a merger between ALPA and the National Pilots Association (NPA), which represents nearly 1,700 AirTran Airways pilots. The merger agreement was approved by ALPA’s Executive Board today at its quarterly meeting.

The swine flu outbreak has raised fresh uncertainty about the outlook for the beleaguered global aviation industry. Prior to this latest threat to industry stability, airline CEOs had become somewhat more optimistic regarding the outlook for profitability and traffic over the next 12 months, according to an IATA survey. And as tracked by The Centre, several CEOs had noted a bottoming of demand and the first signs of a recovery. But many others remain unconvinced.
