India and USA are working on a Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA), which would lead to mutual acceptance of aeronautical products/parts developed in either country. Since aeronautical products are now being designed and manufactured in India, a need was felt for international acceptance of such products.

Indian Air cargo has remained at negligible levels, in comparison to the global standard, due to various factors such as cost, type of cargo and infrastructure. This is set to change in the next three to four years with the Indian economy on a solid growth trajectory and the liberalization of the aviation sector. India is also set to emerge as a cargo hub, due to geographic location between SE Asia and EU nations.

The current financial crunch being faced by Air India needs to be viewed in the global context as the aviation industry worldwide has been passing through turbulent times. All airlines in India and abroad have been experiencing low fares, poor load factors, drop in premium travel, decline in cargo loads and low yields due to market conditions created by global recession. To tide over the situation, all airlines have been forced to take harsh and unpleasant decisions like curtailment of capacity, withdrawal of flights from certain routes, retrenching staff, reducing emoluments, etc.. This has been stated by Mr Arvind Jadhav, Chairman & Managing Director, Air India, in a communication to employees today.

Spicejet, IndiGo and Kingfisher have identified a new way to minimize their spends on agency commissions and GDS charges. Under the leadership of Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), these three airlines are founding a new online travel agency (OTA) - Rang7 - which will sell air tickets for them. The FIA is expected to sign this agreement in their upcoming meeting in 3rd week of May.
