SilkAir to launch services to Coimbatore
(CAPA): Tiger Airways is not the only carrier expanding their network to India, with SilkAir, subsidiary of Singapore Airlines also announcing plans to launch services to Coimbatore in October 2007.

Subject to government approval, SilkAir will, from October 2007, will launch three times weekly services from Singapore to Coimbatore, in the state of Tamil Nadu (South India). The services will mark the first ever-direct air service between both cities.

Coimbatore makes for the regional airline’s third destination in South India, after Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

SilkAir is also looking to launch services to Kathmandu, Nepal later this year. Pending government approval, the airline hopes to introduce three times weekly service between Singapore and Nepal’s capital city. As, there are presently no direct services between both cities, the extended coverage of the joint SilkAir-Singapore Airlines network is expected to boost traffic to Kathmandu through Singapore’s Changi Airport.

SilkAir also plans to boost capacity on existing routes when its Northern Winter schedule comes into effect on 28 October 2007. The airline will operate more services to Yangon, Thiruvananthapuram, Siem Reap, Phuket, Langkawi, and Kota Kinabalu.

With the additional services, SilkAir will operate more than 400 scheduled weekly services this Northern Winter, up 15% over last year.

Meanwhile, Tiger Airways is also scheduled to launch services to Kochi and Chennai in October 2007.
