India and the UAE signed an expanded bilateral air services agreement, covering passengers and cargo.

Details include:

•    Passenger: 11 additional weekly frequencies from Abu Dhabi to India (destinations not disclosed), effective immediately, and seven more from Winter 2007/08 (from Abu Dhabi to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram);
•    Cargo: Designated airlines of both countries may operate unlimited all-cargo services between any points in India and the UAE with any aircraft type, with full third, fourth and fifth freedom traffic rights to any intermediate points or beyond.

Etihad Airways announced (25-Mar-07) plans to launch services from Abu Dhabi to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi in May-07 and Jun-07, respectively, and increase Delhi capacity later this year. The carrier also recently announced plans to launch services from Abu Dhabi to Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

At present, Etihad operates seven services per week to Mumbai and three to Delhi. With Indian visitors to UAE increasing at 30% annually, Etihad expects revenues from the country to increase to about 20% in future, up from 12% currently.
