Air India's budget carrier Air India Express will spread its wings further into the Gulf, with the induction of the 12th owned B737-800 aircraft on 24-Jun-08.
From 14-Jul-08, the airline will commence operations to Kuwait from three cities in south India -- Kozhikode, Kochi and Mangalore. While passengers travelling out of Kozhikode will have a daily flight to Kuwait, those from Kochi will have thrice weekly flights and from Mangalore, two flights a week. With this, the international frequencies of Air India Express will increase to 150 per week. The new aircraft takes the strength of the Air India Express fleet to 19, which includes seven on lease. Attractive designs of India's heritage have been a novel feature of Air India Express aircraft tails. The new aircraft VT-AXW also showcases two important landmarks. While one side of the tail shows the 400-year old Charminar in Hyderabad, the other has a visual of the Buddhist stupa in Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. This stupa, built in the third century B.C. is one of the oldest stone structures in India. The highlight of the stupa is its massive hemispherical dome and intricately carved four gateways or toranas. With convenient timings and economical pricing, Air India Express has positioned itself as the airline of choice, particularly to the Gulf. It commenced operations on 29-Apr-05 and at present operates flights between 14 Indian cities viz. Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvanathapuram, Mumbai, Delhi, Amritsar, Mangalore, Chennai, Lucknow, Tiruchirapalli, Nagpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hyderabad and 12 foreign cities on the network. The 12 international destinations are Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, Muscat, Salalah, Bahrain, Doha, Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. © Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.
